Klipsch Updates the Klipschorn — the Speaker that Started it All

Klipsch had updated the iconic Klipschorn, the first speaker founder Paul W. Klipsch designed and built in 1946-47 and the “only speaker in the world to be in continuous production (and remain relatively unchanged) for more than 70 years.”

In keeping with the original three-way design, the updated Klipschorn AK6 ($7,499 each) retains the fully enclosed corner-style cabinet for its 15-inch cone woofer/exponential folded-horn combo and introduces a new Tractrix horn-loaded 1-inch titanium tweeter and passive crossover network that has been updated with AudioQuest wiring.

In describing the critical nature of a speaker’s midrange performance, Paul Klipsch used to say “the midrange is where we live.” In the new Klipschorn, middle frequencies are delivered by a 2-inch phenolic diaphragm compression driver mated with a high-efficiency exponential horn. As Klipsch maintains on its website, the result is “clarity, accuracy, and remarkable tonal definition” with less distortion from the amplifier and speaker.

The classic corner design of the Klipschorn’s two-piece cabinet, which is “assembled using only the highest-grade adhesives and fasteners,” was an intentional choice by the designer as it allows the gargantuan 53 x 31 x 28-inch speaker to fit in a corner of a room and use the walls and floor to extend the bass. Though it looks the same as the original, the cabinet’s riser base has been redesigned along with the speaker’s input panel, and cable-management system.

The latest iteration of the Klipschorn is designed and built in the U.S., as it has been since the company was founded 72 years ago. Grain-matched wood veneer finish options have been expanded to include natural cherry, satin black ash, and American Walnut with silver luster grille cloth and a new script “Klipschorn” logo made of cast zinc.
