While retaining the solid aluminum case and elegant styling of its predecessor, Mu-so 2nd Generation brings “game-changing” upgrades in performance, features, and functionality, according to the company. “Mu-so was the first truly high-quality wireless music speaker; five years on we’ve re-engineered 95% of it,” said Naim Managing Director Charlie Henderson.
The system will be available from a variety of retail sources starting tomorrow (May 9) for $1,599.
The upgrades start with the proprietary music-streaming platform found in all Naim streaming devices, which now supports high-resolution audio (DSD, WAV, and FLAC files up to 32 bits/384 kHz) via UPnP from a PC, Mac, or network-attached storage device as well as streaming via Apple’s AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Tidal, and Chromecast built-in, which supports numerous music streaming services, including Deezer, Qobuz, Plex, TuneIn, SoundCloud, and Pandora. The platform also supports Bluetooth streaming and provides ready access to thousands of internet radio stations.
Processing power has been increased with a new, 2000 MIPs multicore digital signal processor (DSP), and Wi-Fi connectivity has also been upgraded to ensure a “slicker streaming experience,” with Ethernet, USB, optical audio, and 3.5mm analog audio connections available as options for those who prefer a hard-wire connection.
Power remains 450 watts but all six of the system’s drivers have been redesigned and optimized in conjunction with Focal and Vervent Audio. The cabinet has also been re-engineered to increase internal volume by 13%, which is said to boost bass performance.
Other enhancements include the addition of HDMI ARC (audio return channel) for simplified connection to a TV, a new remote control, and a redesigned interface with 15 touch-sensitive buttons ringed by an illuminated dial that lights up as your hand approaches it, thanks to an embedded proximity sensor. Naim has even added an app-controllable alarm clock.
Mu-so 2nd Generation works as a freestanding music system or as part of a multiroom set-up with other Naim products (including the original Mu-so and Mu-so Qb) via the updated Naim app; with other AirPlay 2-compatible wireless speakers via the Apple Home app; or with other Chromecast-enabled devices via the Google Home app.
Available for iOS and Android devices, the Naim app is now Roon Ready and allows you to create playlists and browse by artist, genre, or album with artwork and extended music information. The app can also be used to control volume and lights as well as select one of three room-compensation modes.
Cosmetic changes include a new burnished gray finish to the aluminum casing and a new style of grille cloth, available in black or one of three new colors — terracotta, olive, or peacock.
